Summer Safety Tips

Hiking, biking, and swimming are all popular summer activities, and many of us are spending more time outside. However, without proper preparation, that could result in injuries.

During the summer, Med Plus Immediate Care sees an increase in injuries that could be avoided. Dr Kessler provides some safety precautions.

As summer continues, kids and youths will be attracted to the pools and lakes nearby. Kessler believes that children’s safety can be increased by providing them with a life jacket and enrolling them in swimming lessons, whether on vacation or at home. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 3,960 fatal unintentional drownings occur every year. Children ages one to four are most likely to drown.

In addition, he warns that engaging in fun activities and excursions can be dangerous, so you should exercise caution to avoid mishaps. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2020, 38,824 people died in traffic crashes. These were the most deaths since 2007. A few ways to reduce travel risk are to tell your friends and family what you are going to do, check the weather, and map out your route to avoid construction and storms.

While camping, check yourself and your children regularly for ticks. Even though it’s fun to hang out in the sun, make sure to regularly apply sunscreen. And lastly, create a safety perimeter around bonfires and make sure there is always an adult supervising.

Enjoy your summer! It’s a season for spending time outdoors, cooking, and playing sports. The summer, however, brings an increased risk of injury. Knowing how to prevent injuries in the summer will help you and your family remain safe.
